Troubleshooting Basic Sound Issues on Your Google TV

If your TCL Google TV has no sound, the audio is cutting out, or the TV speakers are not working as expected, try the steps below to help get the sound working again.

1. Check the Basics First

Start with a few quick checks:

Check the volume
Make sure the TV is not muted and that the volume is turned up.

Check the remote
Press the volume buttons on the remote. If the TV does not respond, replace the batteries or try using the buttons on the TV, if available.

Try a different app, channel, or input
Open another app, switch to a different channel, or try another HDMI input. This helps determine if the issue is with the TV or only with one app, channel, or connected device.

Check connected devices
If you are using a cable box, game console, Blu-ray player, or streaming device, make sure the device volume is not muted and that all cables are securely connected.

2. Disconnect External Audio Devices

Your TV may be sending audio to another device instead of the TV speakers.

Disconnect any external audio devices, such as:

  • Soundbars
  • AV receivers
  • Bluetooth headphones
  • Wireless speakers
  • Devices connected by HDMI ARC/eARC
  • Devices connected by optical audio

After disconnecting the device, check if sound returns through the TV speakers.

3. Confirm the Audio Output Setting

Make sure the TV is set to the correct audio output.

  1. Press the Settings button on your remote, or go to Settings from the Google TV home screen.
  2. Select Display & Sound.
  3. Select Audio or Audio Output.
  4. Choose the correct output option.

For TV speaker audio, select Internal Speakers or TV Speakers, if available.

For a soundbar or receiver, select the correct option such as ARC, eARC, Optical, or Bluetooth, depending on how the device is connected.

Menu names may vary slightly by model and software version. TCL’s Google TV audio settings commonly appear under Settings > Display & Sound > Audio/Audio Output.

4. Restart the TV

A restart can clear temporary audio issues.

  1. Press and hold the Power button on the remote.
  2. Select Restart, if prompted.

If you do not see a restart option:

  1. Turn the TV off.
  2. Unplug the TV from the power outlet.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the TV back in and turn it on.

If you are using a soundbar, receiver, cable box, or game console, restart those devices as well.

5. Check HDMI, ARC, or eARC Connections

If you are using a soundbar or receiver, check the connection.

  • Make sure the HDMI cable is firmly connected.
  • If using ARC or eARC, confirm the cable is connected to the HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC on the TV.
  • Try unplugging and reconnecting the HDMI cable.
  • Try a different HDMI cable, if available.
  • Turn the soundbar or receiver off and back on.

ARC/eARC devices may automatically take over audio output from the TV speakers when connected.

6. Check Bluetooth Audio

If Bluetooth headphones, earbuds, or speakers were recently connected, the TV may still be trying to send sound to that device.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Remotes & Accessories or Bluetooth.
  3. Disconnect or forget any Bluetooth audio device you are not using.
  4. Check the TV sound again.

7. Check for a Software Update

Software updates can help fix audio issues and improve TV performance.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Select System Update.
  5. Install any available updates.

After the update is complete, restart the TV and test the sound again.

8. Reset Audio Settings

If the audio settings were changed by mistake, resetting them may help.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Display & Sound.
  3. Select Audio.
  4. Look for Reset Audio Settings or a similar option.

This will return the TV’s audio settings to their default setup. The exact menu path may vary by model.

9. Factory Reset the TV as a Last Resort

If the TV still has no sound after trying all steps above, a factory reset may be needed.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Select Reset.
  5. Select Factory Reset.

Important: A factory reset will erase downloaded apps, account logins, saved passwords, and customized settings. The TV will return to its original setup state.

Helpful Notes

  • Some external audio devices may disable the TV speakers while connected.
  • Bluetooth audio and TV speaker audio may not always play at the same time, depending on the model and audio output setting.
  • If there is sound from the TV speakers but not from a soundbar or receiver, the issue may be with the external audio device, HDMI cable, optical cable, or ARC/eARC setting.
  • If there is no sound from one app only, try closing and reopening the app, checking for app updates, or testing another app.
