Troubleshooting App Issues on Your TCL Google TV

If an app on your TCL Google TV won’t open, keeps crashing, runs slowly, or won’t play videos correctly, try the steps below. Work through them in order—most issues are fixed by a quick restart or update.

1. Check Your Internet Connection

Many app problems are caused by a weak or unstable internet connection.

Test another app

  • Try opening a different streaming app (for example, YouTube or Netflix).
  • If other apps are also slow or not loading, the issue is likely your internet connection.

Check your network

  • Make sure your modem and router are powered on.
  • If you’re using Wi-Fi, move the TV or router closer together if possible.
  • If available, try using a wired (Ethernet) connection for a more stable signal.

Restart your network equipment

  • Unplug your modem and router from power for 30 seconds, then plug them back in.
  • Wait for the lights to stabilize, then test your TV apps again.

2. Restart Your TCL Google TV

  • A simple restart often clears temporary glitches.
  • Press and hold the Power button on the remote until a power menu appears.
  • Select Restart (or Power off and then turn the TV back on).
  • After the TV restarts, try the app again.
  • If your remote doesn’t show a menu, you can also unplug the TV from power for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

3. Force Stop the App and Reopen It

  • If one specific app is misbehaving, force stopping it can help.
  • From the Google TV home screen, go to:
Settings (gear icon) > Apps > See all apps.
  • Scroll to the app that’s having issues and select it.
  • Choose Force stop and confirm.
  • Go back to the home screen and open the app again.

(Menu names may vary slightly depending on your TV software version.)

4. Clear the App’s Cache (and Data if Needed)

Cached data can sometimes cause apps to freeze or crash.

  • Go to:
Settings > Apps > See all apps > select the app.
  • Choose Clear cache.
  • Try the app again.
  • If the problem continues:
  • Return to the same menu and select Clear data or Clear storage.
  • This may sign you out of the app or reset its settings.
  • Open the app and sign in again (if required).

5. Check for App Updates

Running an outdated version of an app can cause errors.

  • On the Google TV home screen, open the Google Play Store.
  • Go to Manage apps & games or My apps.
  • Look for updates for the problem app.
  • If an update is available, select Update.
  • After the update installs, open the app again.
  • To keep things smoother, you can enable automatic updates in the Play Store settings.

6. Check for a System (Firmware) Update

Keeping your TCL Google TV up to date can fix app compatibility issues.

  • Go to:
Settings > System > About > System update
(On some models, this may be under Device Preferences > About > System update.)
  • If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions.
  • After the update and restart are complete, test the app again.

7. Check Available Storage Space

If your TV is low on storage, apps may run slowly or fail to open.

  • Go to:
Settings > Storage (or Device Preferences > Storage).
  • Check how much free space is available.
  • If storage is low:
  • Uninstall apps you don’t use often:
Settings > Apps > See all apps > select an app > Uninstall.
  • Clear cache for apps that use a lot of data.
  • Then try the problem app again.

8. Reinstall the Problem App

If a single app keeps having issues, reinstalling it often helps.

  • Go to:
Settings > Apps > See all apps > select the app.
  • Choose Uninstall and confirm.
  • Open the Google Play Store from the home screen.
  • Search for the app and select Install.
  • Open the app and sign in again (if needed).

9. Check Date & Time Settings

Incorrect date and time can affect app logins and streaming.

  • Go to:
    Settings > System > Date & time.
  • Turn on Set automatically (if available), or manually set the correct date, time, and time zone.
  • Try the app again.

10. If Only One App Is Affected

If all other apps work normally and only one specific app has issues:

  • Make sure your account for that app is active and in good standing.
  • Check the app provider’s website or social channels to see if they’re experiencing an outage.
  • If needed, contact the app provider’s support team for app-specific help.

11. Reset the TV (Last Resort)

If multiple apps are having problems and none of the steps above helped, you can reset the TV to factory settings as a last resort.

Important: A factory reset will erase your installed apps, accounts, and custom settings. You’ll need to set up your TV again like it was new.

  • Go to:
Settings > System > Reset (or Device Preferences > Reset).
  • Select Factory data reset and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • After the TV restarts, go through the setup process and reinstall your apps from the Google Play Store.
  • Test the apps again.
