How to Troubleshoot a TCL Google TV in Recovery Mode

If your TCL Google TV is showing the Android Recovery screen, stuck on the TCL or Google TV logo, or restarting repeatedly, the TV may be in recovery mode due to a software issue, interrupted startup, or a physical button being pressed.

Recovery mode can sometimes help restart the TV or perform a factory reset. Use the steps below to troubleshoot the issue safely.

Note: Menu names, button locations, and recovery options may vary by TCL TV model and software version.

Before You Start

A factory reset will erase the TV’s saved settings and return it to the original setup experience.

This may remove:

  • Downloaded apps
  • Google account sign-in
  • Wi-Fi settings
  • Picture and sound settings
  • Other customized settings

Only perform a factory reset after trying the restart and button-check steps first.

Start Here

Before selecting any reset option, try restarting the TV from the recovery menu.

  1. On the recovery screen, look for Reboot system now.
  2. Select Reboot system now.
  3. Wait for the TV to restart.

If the TV starts normally, no further action is needed.

If the TV returns to the recovery screen, freezes on the logo screen, or continues restarting, continue with the steps below.

Make Sure the TV Button Is Not Being Pressed

Some TCL TVs have a physical power button on the bottom, back, or side of the TV.

If the TV is resting directly on a surface without the stand, feet, or wall mount properly installed, the power button may be pressed down. This can cause the TV to enter recovery mode or restart unexpectedly.

Check the following:

  • Make sure the TV is not lying flat on its screen or back.
  • Make sure the physical power button is not being held down.
  • Make sure the TV feet or stand are installed correctly.
  • If wall mounted, make sure nothing is pressing against the TV buttons.

After checking this, unplug the TV from power for 60 seconds, plug it back in, and try turning it on again.

If the TV Is Stuck on the Logo Screen

If your TCL Google TV freezes on the TCL or Google TV logo screen:

  1. Unplug the TV from the power outlet.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the TV directly into a wall outlet.
  4. Turn the TV back on.

Avoid using a power strip, surge protector, or extension cord while troubleshooting.

If the TV still freezes on the logo screen, it may return to the recovery screen or require a factory reset.

How to Navigate the Recovery Menu

Recovery mode may not work the same way as the normal Google TV menu.

Depending on your model, you may need to use one of the following to move through the recovery menu:

  • The TV remote directional buttons
  • The physical buttons on the TV
  • The physical power button to select an option

Common recovery menu options may include:

  • Reboot system now
  • Wipe data/factory reset
  • Apply update from USB
  • Power off

Use caution when selecting options. Some options may erase TV data or attempt to install software.

Try Reboot System Now First

If your TV is already on the recovery screen:

  • Highlight Reboot system now.
  • Select it using the remote or TV button.
  • Wait for the TV to restart.

If the TV starts normally, the issue may have been temporary.

If the TV returns to recovery mode, continue to the factory reset section.

Factory Reset from Recovery Mode

A factory reset may help if the TV is stuck in a boot loop, frozen on the logo screen, or repeatedly returning to recovery mode.

Warning: This will erase saved settings and require the TV to be set up again.

To factory reset from recovery mode:

  • From the recovery menu, select Wipe data/factory reset.
  • Confirm by selecting Yes or Factory data reset, depending on the wording shown.
  • Wait for the reset to complete.
  • When the reset is finished, select Reboot system now.
  • Complete the Google TV setup process.

Do not unplug the TV while the reset is in progress.

If Recovery Mode Does Not Appear

If you are trying to access recovery mode but the menu does not appear:

  • Unplug the TV from power.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Make sure you are using the physical button on the TV, not only the remote.
  • Press and hold the TV’s physical Power button.
  • While holding the button, plug the TV back into power.
  • Continue holding the button until the recovery screen appears.

Button location and behavior may vary by model. On some models, the recovery menu may not appear using this method.

Helpful Tips

  • Try Reboot system now before performing a factory reset.
  • Make sure the TV’s physical power button is not being held down.
  • Make sure the TV is not resting on a surface in a way that presses the button.
  • Plug the TV directly into a wall outlet while troubleshooting.
  • Do not use firmware files unless they match your exact TV model.
  • Do not unplug the TV during a reset or software update.
