Window Air Conditioner End-Of-Season Care and Storage

1. Turn Off and Unplug the Unit

  • Switch off the A/C and unplug it from the wall to prevent electrical hazards.
  • Allow the unit to cool completely before handling.

2. Clean the Air Filter

  • Remove the filter and gently wash it with warm water and mild soap.
  • Let it air-dry completely before reinserting or storing.

3. Clean the Exterior and Interior

  • Wipe down the outer shell with a damp cloth.
  • Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust from vents and coils.
  • If accessible, clean the evaporator and condenser coils with a soft brush or coil cleaner.

4. Remove the Unit

  • Carefully remove the A/C from the window (have a second person assist).
  • Place it on a soft, level surface to prevent damage.

5. Drain Excess Water

  • Tilt the unit slightly or open the drain plug (if applicable) to release built-up condensation.

6. Optional: Schedule Professional Maintenance

  • Consider having the unit inspected and cleaned by an HVAC professional before storing it.
  • A specialist can check internal components and ensure it's in top condition for next season.

7. Cover and Store

  • Store the unit upright in a dry, indoor location (like a basement or closet).
  • Cover it with a breathable fabric cover to protect against dust.
  • Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the unit.
