The purpose of this document is to educate and inform end-users on standard operating procedures (SOP) pertaining to formatting USB drives to FAT32 on both Mac (Apple) and Windows (Microsoft) operating systems. FAT32: A universal format that is compatible with Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and DOS systems.
How to Format USB Drive on Windows Computer
Intro:
FAT32 is a universal format that is compatible with Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and DOS systems. Format your removable flash drive to FAT32 with your PC if you anticipate using the drive with more than one operating system.
Items Required:
USB Drive | Windows Computer
Steps
- Insert a flash drive into your PC’s USB port. Navigate to file explorer->This PC and right click the USB drive. (As seen in Figure 1 Step A)
- Left click “Format”. (As seen in Figure 1 Step B)
- Navigate to File System and Confirm FAT32 is selected. (As seen in Figure 2 Step A)
- Check the “Quick Format” checkbox and Left click “Start”. (As seen in Figure 2 Steps B & C)
- Confirm the data on the USB drive can be removed and click “OK”. (As seen in Figure 3)
- The status bar will start to fill, and a pop-up will appear once format is complete. Click “OK”. (As seen in Figure 4 & Figure 5)
- Now files can be added to the USB drive for use.
- Right click the drive on the desktop and choose "Get Info" and Confirm that the format of your flash drive is now MS-DOS (FAT32).

How to Format USB Drive on Apple Computer
Intro:
FAT32 is a universal format that is compatible with Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and DOS systems. Format your removable flash drive to FAT32 with your Mac if you anticipate using the drive with more than one operating system. You can reformat disks in Mac OS X Yosemite using the Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.

Steps
- Insert a flash drive into your Mac's USB port. The drive icon will appear on your desktop once USB drive is detected.
- Double-click the "Utilities" folder in the Applications section in Finder. (As seen in Figure 1)
- Double-click "Disk Utility." (This utility allows you to format, partition or otherwise modify disks.) (As seen in Figure 2)
- Choose your flash drive from the list of disks on the left side of the utility. Click the "Erase" tab to access the disk-formatting settings. (As seen in Figure 3 & Figure 4)
- Choose "MS-DOS (FAT)" from the format drop-down list and click erase. (As seen in Figure 5)
- Right click the drive on the desktop and choose "Get Info" and Confirm that the format of your flash drive is now MS-DOS (FAT32). (As seen in Figure 6 & Figure 7)
