Troubleshooting Guide TCL Air Conditioner Not Cooling the Room

If your TCL Air Conditioner is running but the room is not getting cooler, follow the troubleshooting steps below in order.

Do not use Fan Mode or Dry Mode when checking whether the air conditioner can produce cold air.

Fan Mode circulates room air but does not normally activate the cooling compressor. Dry Mode primarily removes moisture and may provide less cooling than Cool Mode.

The selected temperature must also be lower than the current room temperature. Otherwise, the air conditioner may determine that no additional cooling is needed.

Many models include a short compressor delay after being turned on or having their settings changed.

Why the delay is normal:
The delay protects the compressor from restarting too quickly, which could place unnecessary strain on the cooling system.

Step 3: Check the Airflow from the Vents

Place your hand several inches in front of the air outlet.

  • The air is blowing strongly but does not feel cool.

  • No air is coming from the vents.

  • The number of people regularly in the room
  • Heat-producing appliances
  • Poor insulation
  • Open floor plans
  • Connections to other rooms or hallways

An air conditioner that is too small may run continuously without reaching the selected temperature because it cannot remove heat quickly enough.

A unit that is much too large may cool the room too quickly and shut off before removing enough humidity. This is known as short cycling and can leave the room feeling damp or uncomfortable.

Step 9: Perform a Power Reset

A power reset can clear a temporary electrical or control-system issue.

  1. Turn the air conditioner off.
  2. Unplug it from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait five minutes.
  4. Plug it directly back into the wall outlet.

  6. Select Cool Mode.

Outdoor conditions can affect how well the air conditioner operates.

When It Is Cool Outside

If the outdoor temperature is approximately 60°F or lower, the coils may become too cold and freeze more easily.

Why this happens:
Most room air conditioners are designed to operate during warm weather. When the outdoor temperature is low, the pressure and temperature inside the cooling system may drop enough to contribute to frost or ice formation.

During Extreme Heat

When outdoor temperatures approach or exceed 100°F, the air conditioner may:

  • Run longer than usual
  • Take more time to cool the room
  • Struggle to reach very low temperature settings
  • Cycle less frequently

Why this happens:
The greater the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the harder the air conditioner must work to remove heat from the room and release it outdoors.

Longer run times during extreme heat do not always indicate that the unit is malfunctioning.

Step 13: Retest the Air Conditioner

  1. Turn the air conditioner on.
  2. Select Cool Mode.
  3. Set the fan speed to High.
